Description
St. Govan's Chapel is an unusual medieval building blended into the side of a limestone cliff in Pembrokeshire, Wales.
This small structure (6.1 m × 3.7 m) conceals a fascinating history dating back to the 13th century, although some elements may date back as far as the 6th century, when Saint Govan lived in a cave in the area.
According to local legend, Saint Govan was buried under the altar of the chapel. The site was famous for miraculous healings, especially of eye diseases and lameness.
There are 52 steps leading up to the chapel, and nearby is the Ogof Gofan cave system with its 'cathedral-like structure', used by people for thousands of years.
