Description

Greyfriars is a fascinating historical monument in Gloucester, founded in 1231 by Lord Berkeley. This medieval Franciscan monastery impresses with its unique Gothic architecture, especially its impressive nave and north side aisle of almost equal height and width.

As you walk around, you'll discover traces of its tumultuous history - from its Gothic-style reconstruction in 1518 to its destruction during the siege of Gloucester in 1643. Today, you can admire the surviving fragments of the original windows with Gothic masquerade and immerse yourself in the atmosphere of medieval England.

avatarPete / Hela year agoThe Franciscan friary at Gloucester was founded in 1231, but in about 1518 a prominent local family, the Berkeleys of Berkeley Castle, paid for the church to be rebuilt in Perpendicular Gothic style. This incorporated the earlier church but only survived a short while as the friary was surrendered to the king in 1539 at the suppression of the monasteries. Not much left of it now, and stinks of pee.
avatarAnthony Chana year agoReally old ruins that is not properly managed. Smells of weed and piss because dodgy dealings and homeless people now just come and congregate here. A real shame.
avatarMeha Desai2 years agoNot as expected. No enough information is available for what to see and what it is exactly. Would be better if more information is available
