Description

Equestrian Statue of George I is an exceptional historical monument, being the work of John van Nost the Elder. This impressive sculpture depicts King George I in modern armor, holding a mace, sitting on a horse, which is an almost exact copy of the mount from the statue of Charles I by Hubert le Sueur.

The statue was commissioned by Dublin City in 1717 and unveiled in 1722 amid lavish celebrations. It is an excellent example of 18th century sculpture and is a token of gratitude for the many favors rendered to the city of Dublin by King George.
