Description
Atapuerca is a unique archaeological site in the province of Burgos, a treasure trove of knowledge about human evolution. It is a UNESCO-listed site because of its remarkable discoveries - the oldest traces of hominid settlement in Western Europe and the first evidence of cannibalism among human ancestors.
More than 5,500 bone remains belonging to Homo heidelbergensis from 350,000 years ago have been discovered in caves such as Gran Dolina and Sima de los Huesos.
For a full understanding of the significance of the site, the Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos is also worth a visit.
