Description
Złoті worota is a monumental defensive gate from the 11th century, one of the oldest dated structures in Eastern Europe. Built during the reign of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, it was the main entrance to ancient Kiev, modeled on the gates of Constantinople.
The massive defensive tower topped with the Church of the Annunciation survived the Mongol invasion in 1240. Rediscovered in 1832 during excavations, today it is protected by a special museum pavilion with an observation deck.
A symbol of the resilience of Kiev and the power of Kievan Rus.
