Description
Skenfrith Castle is a fascinating medieval fortification that is part of the famous 'Three Castles of Gwent'. Originally a wooden structure, it was replaced with a stone donjon and defensive wall in the 13th century by Hubert de Burgh.
Strategically located on the banks of the River Monnow, the castle controlled one of the main roads between England and Wales, protecting Norman estates from Welsh uprisings.
Its impressive central tower and well-preserved walls on an earthen hilltop will delight history buffs, families and photographers seeking picturesque views.

Jo Harvey5 months agoPart of the 'three castles' the only one without a moat to cross. Free entry. Adjacent church has an original dovecote at the top of the church tower. The Bell, across the road, is a very pleasant dog friendly pub
Mick3 weeks agoGreat castle ruins, small field to walk round as well and the river at the rear for a quick dip. Entry free as well.
Garf11 months agoWe did Grosmont, Skenfrith and White Castle back to back today.
Really liked Skenfrith. Wasn't the easiest to find but sat nav did get us there. Not much parking, we were lucky someone was leaving just as we arrived.
Castle is great, but spent more time down by the river. A couple of families were swimming. Good for a 30 minute stop-off, we were there well over an hour.Related categories
