Description
Waldkirch Castle (Kastelburg) is a fascinating medieval fortress built between 1260 and 1270 by the Schwarzenberg Lords to protect the town of Waldkirch and control the trade route through the Elz Valley.
With thick walls 2-3 meters wide and large windows, the castle is a unique combination of defensive and aesthetic architecture. Restored in 2002, it allows one to see the original structure and building materials.
The Ritterweg path leading to the castle is decorated with life-size statues of knights, adding to the charm of the whole trip. The hilltop offers spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the town.
