Description
The Siegestor is a monumental triumphal gate in Munich, inspired by the Roman Arch of Constantine. Built between 1843 and 1852 and commissioned by King Ludwig I of Bavaria, it combines neoclassical architecture with a profound message of peace.
Decorated with sculptures and reliefs depicting scenes of military triumph, it is topped by a bronze quadriga with lions led by an allegorical figure of Bavaria.
The unique inscription 'Dedicated to victory, destroyed by war, a reminder of peace' reflects the transformation of this monument from a symbol of military triumph to a symbol of peace.
