Description
The Victor Emmanuel II Horse Monument is an impressive monument located on the Riva degli Schiavoni in Venice. Created in 1887 by Ettore Ferrari, it commemorates the first king of a united Italy.
The bronze statue depicts the ruler on horseback with a drawn sword, symbolizing his role in the unification of the country. At the base of the monument, made of pink granite and Istrian stone, are two allegories of Venice: 'Venice Subdued' and 'Venice Triumphant'.
The monument is also decorated with bas-reliefs depicting important historical events, including the Battle of Palestro and the king's triumphal entry into Venice.
