Description
Whitby Abbey is a fascinating historical monument located on a cliff overlooking the North Sea. This former Benedictine monastery, founded in 657, witnessed the pivotal Synod of 664 that shaped the history of the Church of England.
The site inspired Bram Stoker to write his famous novel 'Dracula'. The atmospheric ruins dating back to the 13th century and the 199 steps leading up to St. Mary's Church create an unforgettable experience.
In the museum on the abbey grounds, you can admire artifacts from archaeological excavations while learning about the lives of the monks and nuns who once inhabited the site.
