Description
Mellifont Abbey is the first Cistercian monastery in Ireland, founded in 1142 by Saint Malachi.
Its most distinctive feature is the 13th-century lavabo, an architecturally unique structure that emphasizes the Cistercian commitment to purity and ritual.
The abbey played a key role in Irish history - it served as William of Orange's military base before the Battle of the Boyne in 1690, and was previously dissolved by Henry VIII in 1539 during the Reformation.
