Menhir Meada

The Meada Menhir is the largest menhir on the Iberian Peninsula, rising to an impressive height of 7.15 meters and weighing about 18 tons. This fascinating megalith dates back to the Neo-Chalcolithic period, around 5000 BC, making it one of the oldest menhirs in the world.

Carved from coarse-grained porphyry granite, it has a distinctive phallic shape with a prominent acorn on top, suggesting its use in prehistoric fertility rituals.

Nearby is a small picnic park, ideal for relaxing and admiring this remarkable witness to prehistory amidst the picturesque Alentejo landscape.
