Description
The Mainz Citadel is a fascinating monument with more than 2000 years of history. Originally built in 9 AD by the Roman army as a cenotaph commemorating Drusus, brother of Emperor Tiberius and founder of the city of Mainz.
At the heart of the citadel is the impressive 30-meter-tall Roman monument Drususstein. The structure has four bastions: Alarm, Tacitus, Drusus and Germanicus, designed in 1655.
Today the citadel houses the Mainz Historical Museum and is the site of the annual Open Ohr festival. A walk through the citadel naturally leads to the Roman amphitheater Mogontiacum, creating an unforgettable journey through centuries of history.
