Description
The Arch of Trajan is an impressive Roman monument in Merida, Spain, a testament to the city's former power. This 15-meter-high semicircular arch provided a monumental entrance to the sacred space surrounding the temple of imperial worship.
Contrary to its name, it is not dedicated to Emperor Trajan, but served as a gateway leading to the provincial forum. It looks especially spectacular at night, when the illumination highlights its ancient majesty.
The hinges of the monumental doors that once closed the passage are still visible on the pavement.
