Description
Loughcrew is a fascinating complex of megalithic tombs from the Neolithic era, dating to around 3300 BC.
Also known as Sliabh na Calliagh (Witch Mountain), it hides more than 30 ancient tombs scattered across four hills. The best-preserved Cairn T impresses with unique petroglyphs and a special arrangement that during the spring and autumn equinoxes allows the rays of the rising sun to illuminate the symbols carved on the back wall of the chamber.
Don't miss the 'Witch's Chair' - a stone throne on which, according to tradition, one can sit and make a wish. Legend has it that the monuments were created when a giant witch, walking on the ground, dropped a load of large stones from her apron.
