Description
The Capuchin Crypt in Vienna is a fascinating resting place of the Habsburg dynasty, in operation since 1633.
In the vaults of the Capuchin Church lie 149 members of the imperial family, including 12 emperors and 19 empresses. Most impressive are the richly decorated sarcophagi of Maria Theresa and her husband Francis I, contrasting with the modest tomb of their son Joseph II.
Each of the crypt's chambers represents a different architectural style, from Renaissance to Art Nouveau, creating a remarkable journey through the history of European art and culture.
