Description
The Column of Trajan is one of the most magnificent monuments of ancient Rome. Weighing more than 1,100 tons, this monumental 30-meter-high Carrara marble structure impresses with a 190-meter-long spiral frieze that tells the story of the Dacian Wars.
The 23 scrolls of bas-relief feature more than 2,600 figures, including Emperor Trajan himself, who appears as many as 58 times.
Originally, the column was crowned by a statue of Trajan, which was replaced by a statue of St. Peter in 1587. It is not only a masterpiece of art, but also a remarkable source of knowledge about the life and wars of the ancient empire.
