Description
Klis Fortress is an impressive fortress with 2000 years of history, located on a cliff with breathtaking views of Split and the Adriatic Sea.
This former seat of Croatian kings, including Prince Mislav and King Tomislav, was a key defensive point against the Ottoman Empire.
Fans of 'Game of Thrones' will recognize the fortress as Meereen City from the series' second season. Inside is a museum and the Church of St. Vida, which was converted from a mosque after the fortress was recaptured by the Venetians.

Sam Goh SEa month agoHistorical site with rich history. The fortress was very well conserved and maintained. Awesome sight. Being set against the top of the hill makes it even more grand. We love it and was wowed by its stunning architecture and the surrounding hills. Simply spectacular!! It's a must visit location if you're visiting Split.
Thomas Winsletta month agoThis is an awesome place to visit if you have a car and time while around Split. The location at the mountain pass is stunning and it is obvious why it played a central role in the defense of the area.
I would rate it five stars if the plaques were in English but so much of the information is only in Croatian. Staff at the entrance spoke English and were very helpful.
There is a good size parking lot at the bottom of the peak. The route up is gravel and some concrete but is not very long. Wheelchair or those with walkers will find it challenging.
I used an app to translate some of the information plaques and found them interesting and informative. I'm glad I had done research ahead of time so I already had an idea of what I would experience with the rich history that it has.
