Hvalsey Church

Hvalsey Church is the best-preserved Norse ruin in Greenland—a 14th-century Catholic church built of stone, with walls reaching 5-6 meters in height.

It is the site of the last documented Nordic event in Greenland – a wedding in 1408. Monumental stone walls almost a meter thick, built in the Anglo-Norwegian style, surround a space that once held 30-35 worshippers.

The ruins are a fascinating testimony to the medieval Christian presence at the edge of the known world, offering a journey back in time to the era of sagas and Erik the Red.
