Description

Het Steen is the oldest building in Antwerp, dating back to the early Middle Ages. Originally protecting against Viking incursions, this stone fortress served various functions, from a prison to a maritime museum.

Today it is a modern tourist information center with an interactive exhibition telling the city's history in 11 rooms. Note the picturesque entrance gate and the statue of the legendary giant Lange Wapper, who, according to local legends, terrorized the locals.

The new extension of the building harmoniously blends historic stone walls with modernity, creating a unique place on the map of Antwerp.
