Description

Hephaisteion is the best-preserved Greek temple, built between 445 and 425 BC in the Doric style.

This architectural gem impresses with its structure with six columns on the shorter sides and thirteen on the longer sides. The interior is decorated with magnificent metopes depicting the exploits of Heracles and Theseus, and a frieze with reliefs showing the battles of the Lapitas.

The main cell once housed a statue of Athena and Hephaestus chiseled by Alkamenes. Located on a hill above the Agora, the temple offers an unforgettable experience for lovers of ancient Greek culture.
