Grabenhäusle Ulm

Grabenhäusle Ulm are unique houses built on the city walls between 1610 and 1633 for city soldiers. These small buildings, whose name comes from the German word 'Graben' (ditch), were originally part of the city's fortifications.

They were originally the lowest housing standard, but the 35 surviving houses were modernized in the 1980s. Once inhabited by former soldiers and military widows, over time they became a gathering place for the urban poor.

Today they are a romantic symbol of the 'good old days' and a popular motif on Ulm postcards.
