Description
Fort de la Chartreuse is a fascinating military monument in Liège, built between 1817 and 1823 by the Dutch on the site of a former Carthusian monastery. This abandoned fort hides a tumultuous history - it served as a prison during both World Wars and as an American military hospital from 1944 to 1945.
Today it is a paradise for history buffs, photographers and urban jungle explorers. The vast expanses, ramparts and vegetated glacis create a unique atmosphere of a place suspended between past and present.
Use caution when exploring - some areas can be dangerous due to structural damage.
