Description
Fort Brockhurst is a fascinating 19th century military monument, built between 1858 and 1862 as part of Portsmouth's defense system. This hexagonal fort with a circular tower surrounded by a moat is an excellent example of Victorian military architecture.
Never used for its intended purpose, it has been preserved almost intact. Visitors can admire the parade ground, cannon ramps and drawbridge. Damage from World War II bombing can also be seen, which paradoxically provides a better understanding of the fort's construction.
It's an ideal place for lovers of history and military architecture.
