Description

The Brabo Fountain is an impressive sculpture-fountain in the heart of Antwerp, created by Jef Lambeaux in 1887.

It depicts the legendary Silvius Brabo, who, according to local legend, defeated the giant Druon Antigonus by cutting off his hand and throwing it into the Scheldt River. This heroic tale gave rise to the city's name (Antwerpen - 'to throw one's hand').

Surrounded by historic guildhalls and the city hall, the fountain is the perfect starting point for exploring the city's other attractions, including the impressive St. Mary's Cathedral.
