Description
The Poenari Citadel is the real Dracula's castle where Vlad the Impaler lived. The medieval fortress located high in the Carpathian Mountains offers an unforgettable experience for history and adventure lovers.
There are 1,480 concrete steps leading up to the ruins, but the views and atmosphere of the place reward every effort. The castle combines Transylvanian and Byzantine architecture, and the reddish brick walls give it a distinctive look.
The place is shrouded in legends, including the story of Vlad's escape from the Ottoman army and the tragic fate of his wife. Unlike the popular Bran Castle, Poenari is the authentic residence of the famous Wallachian ruler.
