Description
The St. Mary's Gate is a jewel of Gothic architecture in the heart of Gdansk. Destroyed in 1945 and painstakingly rebuilt in 1958-1961, this 15th-century building impresses with its distinctive pointed-arch gate, octagonal towers and high gable roof.
On the facade one can admire the preserved coats of arms of Gdansk supported by lions, the coats of arms of Royal Prussia and Poland.
The southern part of the gate houses the Archeological Museum, which is an additional attraction for history buffs. Walking down Mariacka Street towards the largest brick church in the world - St. Mary's Basilica - is an unforgettable experience.
