Description

The ancient rock carvings near Tromsø are a fascinating testament to prehistoric culture, dating back as far as 4600 BC. They are among the oldest in Scandinavia!

The carvings depict moose, porpoises, reindeer and human figures in boats, showing the life of ancient communities. They are best seen in the evening, when the sun falls at an oblique angle.

The oldest figures are found in Bukkhammaren, while the Kirkely and Gråbergan fields contain dozens of engravings from later periods. Discovered in 1799, they were forgotten and only rediscovered in 1913.
