Description

Abdulaziz Khan Madrassah is a 17th-century educational complex in Bukhara, built in 1652, famous for its stunning mosaics and intriguing legend.

The architects hid a miniature portrait of the ruler in the floral ornamentation of the mihrab, circumventing the Koranic prohibition on depicting human figures. This artistic audacity reportedly delighted Abdulaziz Khan so much that he abandoned the construction.

Today, this UNESCO gem delights with its colorful tiles, carved stalactites, and frescoes inspired by Indian art.
