Description
The Group of Tetrarchs is a fascinating sculpture from the 4th century AD, located on the southern facade of St. Mark's Basilica in Venice.
This porphyry composition depicts four Roman emperors, Diocletian, Maximian, Galerius and Constantius Chlorus, embracing each other in a gesture of unity and solidarity of the Roman Empire.
It was originally located in Constantinople, from where it was looted by the Venetians during the Fourth Crusade in 1204. Its red color and historical value make it one of the most intriguing architectural elements of St. Mark's Square.
