Description
Mitropoleos Square is the historic heart of Athens' Plaka district, where the majestic 19th-century Metropolitan Cathedral stands next to an 11th-century Byzantine church.
The interior of the cathedral impresses with its red marble iconostasis and the tombs of saints, including St. Philothea, who ransomed Greek slaves. An ancient frieze from the 4th century BC has survived above the main entrance.
The shaded square with monuments to the last emperor of Byzantium and Archbishop Damaskinos offers a peaceful retreat among icon shops and nearby cafes.
