Description
Theater of Dionysus is the cradle of dramatic art, located on the southern slope of the Acropolis in Athens. It was built in the 6th century BC, originally as a wooden structure, later rebuilt in stone around 330 BC by Lycurgus.
It was here that the most famous Greek tragedians - Aeschylus, Sophocles, Euripides and comedian Aristophanes - presented their works. The theater was famous for its revolutionary acoustics, allowing it to be heard perfectly from anywhere.
The annual Dionysia festivals featured tragedies, comedies and choral performances.
