Description

The Golden Roof is one of Innsbruck's most distinctive landmarks, and one that impresses with its splendor and history. This Late Gothic bay window decorated with more than 2,600 gilded copper tiles was built around 1500 on the orders of Emperor Maximilian I.

It is decorated with beautiful bas-reliefs and frescoes depicting scenes from the life of the aristocracy. Although the name suggests gold, the roof is actually covered with gold-coated copper, which gives it a distinctive glow, especially in the afternoon sun.

The building houses a museum showcasing the history of the Tyrol region.
