Description
The Maulbronn Monastery is a unique UNESCO-listed monument, founded in 1147 by the Cistercian Order.
It is one of the best-preserved medieval monastery complexes north of the Alps, combining Romanesque and Gothic styles. The antechamber, dating from around 1220, is the oldest example of Gothic architecture in Germany.
The complex is famous for its elaborate water management system, including reservoirs, irrigation canals and drains. Over the centuries, the monastery was plundered, converted into a hunting lodge, and later served as a Protestant school attended by Johannes Kepler and Hermann Hesse, among others.
