Description

The Arch of Germanicus is a unique Roman monument from the 1st century AD, which has survived for almost two thousand years as a testament to the power of the ancient empire in Gaul.

This two-span arch does not glorify battles—it is a votive gift from a wealthy citizen, C. Julius Rufus, commemorating the son of Emperor Tiberius. It is decorated with Latin inscriptions and reliefs, and its location near the former bridge over the Charente River reminds us of the importance of Saintes as the capital of the Santon tribe.

A rare example of preserved Roman road architecture in excellent condition.
