Description
La Chartreuse de Villeneuve is one of the largest Carthusian monasteries in France, founded in the 14th century by Pope Innocent VI. This monumental complex impresses with its rich history and unique architecture including a church, three cloisters and forty monks' cells.
Decorated with gold, marble, sculptures and paintings, it reflects its former splendor. Today it serves as a cultural center, being home to the National Playwriting Center, which rivals the world theater festival in Avignon.
Discover the treasures of the site as you stroll through the courtyards and halls, admiring the frescoes commissioned by the Pope and his tomb.
