Description

The Ozama Fortaleza is one of the oldest surviving military structures in the Americas, built between 1502 and 1508.

This medieval fortress with its impressive 18-meter-high Torre del Homenaje tower offers a fascinating journey back in time. Coral stone walls up to 3 meters thick attest to the strategic importance of Santo Domingo during the colonial period.

In the past, it served not only as a defensive point, but also as a prison where Christopher Columbus, among others, was held. Unique elements like the 1787 Carlos III Gate and the statue of Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo add to the building's unique character.
