Description
The Neptune Fountain is a masterpiece of Renaissance sculpture, designed by Bartolomeo Ammannati at the request of Cosimo I de Medici in 1559.
The central figure of Neptune, carved from white Carrara marble, stands on a shell-shaped chariot pulled by four marble sea horses.
The fountain is decorated with bronze mythological figures, including Tritons, Nereids, Fauns and Satyrs. Neptune's face was modeled after Cosimo I, symbolizing his power and domination of the city over the seas.
