Description
The Church of St. Nicholas in Ghent is one of the oldest and most impressive monuments in the heart of Ghent, Belgium. This 13th-century temple impresses with its unique Scaldian Gothic style, with a distinctive central tower that once served as an observation post for the city's guards.
The interior of the church is captivating with its neo-Gothic decor, marble altar and pulpit, and a collection of 18th-century sculptures, including a replica of Michelangelo's 'Madonna and Child'. Of particular interest is the unusual design of the central tower, which, instead of being above the entrance, is placed at the intersection of nave and transept, creating a natural light source.
