Description
The Domus Aurea, or Golden House, is an ancient palace built by Emperor Nero in the first century AD after the Great Fire of Rome.
This architectural masterpiece was notable for its innovative domes, which provided excellent interior lighting. The walls were decorated with magnificent frescoes, precious marbles and sculptures imported from Greece and Asia Minor.
The palace was surrounded by extensive gardens, artificial lakes and fountains, creating a luxurious oasis in the heart of the city. After Nero's death, the complex fell into disrepair and was buried, only to be rediscovered in the 15th century.
