Description
Monument to Friar Antonio of Montesino is an impressive monument commemorating the Dominican friar who courageously defended the rights of the indigenous Taino people in the 16th century.
Erected by Mexican architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, it reaches nearly 30 meters in height and combines stone and bronze. The statue of the monk, almost 5 meters high, is located on the upper terrace, which offers a spectacular view of the Ozama River estuary and the Caribbean Sea.
It is not only a monument, but a symbol of the struggle for human rights and social justice, whose famous 1511 sermon influenced the treatment of Native Americans by European colonizers.
