Description
Kalø Castle is one of the largest and best-preserved castle ruins in Denmark. Built in 1313 by King Erik Menved to quell rebellions by local nobles and peasants against the crown.
The castle is famous for its innovative flanking tower, the first of its kind in Denmark, which made it almost impregnable. The most famous prisoner was Gustav Vasa, later King of Sweden.
Located at the top of a small island in Kalø Bay, connected to the mainland by a causeway, it offers breathtaking views of Mols Bjerge National Park.
