Description

Salona Archaeological Site - Roman Ruins is a fascinating archaeological site that is the remains of the ancient capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia.

Here you can admire the impressive ruins of a 2nd century amphitheater that could hold up to 18,000 spectators, as well as the remains of a thermal baths, a cemetery basilica and a cathedral with an octagonal baptistery.

The site was a significant center of early Christianity, as evidenced by numerous sarcophagi and inscriptions in Latin and Greek. A walk among these ancient walls is a true journey back in time to the glory days of the Roman Empire.

avatarMartin Hattas2 weeks agoBeautiful place, we were satisfied with our visit. We explored the entire area. It would definitely be worth it if the kids looked up from their phones and cleaned up their checkpoints before opening. I understand that's probably asking a lot, but after climbing into 16 sarcophagi and pulling out a plastic bottle, and leaving the amphitheater feeling like a janitor... well, that’s a bit of a shame, isn’t it?
avatarPawel Matusz4 months agoInteresting remains of a walled Roman town, only partially excavated, within a 15 mins drive from Split, a nice 2-3h activity. You can walk around fairly freely. The main entrance is on the north side with a small free car park (search for Salona main entrance) where the ticket office is. The whole place is not fenced so you can as well enter from other places. Small tip, I noticed many locals come for a stroll with the dogs of run and park at the western Amphiteatre, and then go around for free. I don't think it's a must see if you've been to other Roman ruins, bit it is a nice walk.
avatarPéter Madára week agoAncient Roman site near Split. It is worth visiting. One and a half hour needed only from the visitor center to a Colosseum and back again.
