Description
Cowdray Ruins are some of the most important early Norman houses in England, and have been visited by both King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I.
The ruins showcase significant Tudor architecture, including the Tudor Kitchen, Buck Hall, Chapel and Gate. The Kitchen Tower is the only part of the mansion that remained intact after a devastating fire in 1793.
The site is associated with a legend of a curse allegedly prophesied by a monk at Battle Abbey. The legend suggests that the house would be destroyed by fire and water, which some believe came true during the 1793 fire.
