Description
The Ely Cathedral is a masterpiece of medieval architecture, combining Romanesque and Gothic styles. Its most distinctive feature is the central octagonal tower, designed by Alan of Walsingham after the Norman tower collapsed.
The interior impresses with its richly decorated features, including the famous Prior's Portal - one of the finest examples of 12th century sculpture in England.
Art lovers will appreciate the Stained Glass Museum in the south triforium, displaying a collection from the 13th century to the present. The cathedral was an important place of pilgrimage until the suppression of the monasteries in 1539.
