Description
The Basilica of the Holy Blood is a unique sacred monument in the heart of Bruges. It consists of two chapels - the lower Romanesque chapel dedicated to St. Basil and the upper Gothic chapel, where the most precious relic is kept - the ampulla with the Blood of Christ, brought from the Holy Land in 1150 by Count Thierry of Alsace.
Every year on the Feast of Ascension, the famous Procession of the Holy Blood takes place here, during which locals in historical costumes reenact biblical scenes. The interior of the basilica impresses with its rich decorations, stained glass windows and wooden panelled ceiling.
