Description
St Briavels Castle is a fascinating medieval castle dating back to the 13th century that hides a rich history.
Originally built as a royal administrative center for the Forest of Dean, it also served as a prison and a center for the production of crossbow bolts. The most distinctive feature is the Edwardian gatehouse erected by Edward I in 1292.
Today the castle functions mainly as a youth hostel, but offers tours of the courtyard and the garden created in the former moat. The local tradition of 'Bread and Cheese Dole', during which bread and cheese are thrown from the castle walls, adds to the unique character of the place.
