Description

Castillo de la Luz is the oldest defensive fortress in the Canary Islands, dating back to the late 15th century. This square, three-story castle originally protected Las Palmas de Gran Canaria from pirate attacks.

Today, this unique place combines history with culture - since 2015 it has housed the Martín Chirino Foundation for Art and Thought, offering fascinating art exhibitions and events.

Built on a coral reef, it was cut off from the mainland at high tide, making it an excellent strategic point. The well-preserved yellow tumbled stone walls remember the days when the castle was a key part of the city's defense.

avatarMatt Johnson4 months agoQuite interesting, but would have preferred more information about the castle than about the art installation. Also felt very uncomfortable as a member of staff watched me like a hawk as if I was going to steal one of the huge iron art pieces. Followed me from the minute I entered until I left.
avatarLuca Paiuscoa year agoNice castle with museum that we hadn't the occasion to visit. It represents a nice example of old spanish fortress used to protect the island and the old city of Las Palmas. It is located inside a small park with a playground for children.
avatarArtis Grizānsa year agoDon't visit this place of you are looking for a history museum with antique weapons or stories of spanish expeditions. Also consider if your kids will appreciate it. This is an amazing modern art museum that is built on the grounds of an old fortification. It is a very interesting piece of architecture where the remains of an old building are carefully exposed and blended with a modern and monumental concrete architecture. It houses a permanent exhibition of sculptures that go very hand in hand with the spaces created in the building. I had a wonderful time exploring this museum and wondering around on the multiple levels and passages, reading stories on the finctional history of the fortress amd exploring useless sculptures and the way how they have been integrated in the vast space. Worthwile visisit if you enjoy contemporary architecture, enjoy the luxury of space and want to experience something interesting.
