Description

Catacombe di San Gaudioso is a fascinating ancient catacombs in Naples, dating back to the 4th to 5th centuries.

It is the second largest catacombs in the city, famous for its unique 'scolatura dei defunti' funerary practices, where the bodies of nobles were drained before burial and the skulls decorated with frescoes depicting the profession of the deceased.

The site impresses with beautiful frescoes and mosaics dating from the 5th to the 6th century, depicting early Christian symbols. Particularly valuable is the welcoming fresco with the Apostle Peter. Discover an unusual combination of early Christianity and Baroque art!
