Description

Burg Zavelstein is a fascinating castle ruin on a hill, dating from around 1200 from the Stauf period.

The 28-meter-high tower offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Swabian Jura and the Black Forest. Between 1616 and 1630, the castle was rebuilt in the late Renaissance style by the princely master builder Heinrich Schickhardt.

The site has witnessed many historical events, including the escape of Count Eberhard II and his son Ulrich from an ambush in 1367 and the looting by French troops in 1692 during the War of the Palatine Succession.
